511.org governmental platform support and improvement
511.org is an enterprise web platform built for the San Francisco Bay Area that provides users with relevant and timely information about traffic, transit, carpool, vanpool, and bicycling. The website is funded by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and is available for citizens round the clock in the nine-county Bay Area, which counts over 7 million citizens.
The challenge
511.org needed 24/7 platform support to guarantee the website's stable operation for users, fix system errors, and implement required functionality improvements. Kalamuna contracted with Lemberg Solutions to provide overnight coverage, assist in the maintenance of its AWS and Python infrastructure, and help safely release code deployments on both Aquia and Pantheon.
Delivered value
We extended Kalamuna's internal team with additional DevOps, Drupal, AWS, and Python engineers. LS engineers also augmented project documentation and assisted with platform improvements and feature releases.
The process
The Kalamuna internal team needed additional technical support from someone with Python and AWS expertise to improve and stabilize the legacy platform. We began by consuming project documentation from 511’s previous tech vendor.
We participated in a series of meetings to analyze the platform more deeply, including its current services and dependencies. Subsequently, we helped improve existing documentation and maintenance processes for the legacy AWS infrastructure. Our DevOps specialists ensured the cloud services functioned smoothly, were well monitored, and proposed backup and optimization strategies.
The 511.org platform was integrated with an unsupported Python 2.7 service Proxy API used for public information distribution. Lemberg Solutions assisted Kalamuna in designing and developing a new API Gateway product, built on Tyk.io, to replace the legacy system.
Support of the 511.org website is ongoing, ensuring platform operations around the clock to deliver users the latest traffic and transit information.
